Founded on May 13th 1945 as Maritime Daily, it celebrates this year its 70th birthday. Its predecessor was Partisan Daily (1943-1945). This newspaper has a mission and it is intended for Slovenian minority in Italy. It advocates equality for all oppressed groups, including gender equality and it uses gender sensitive language. With this in view, the newspaper hasn’t had a woman editor in chief throughout its 70 years of existence. At the same time, we need to keep in mind that for the first 30 years, there were no women employed in journalist profession.
At the entrance, we saw an old printing machine with lead letters. We also saw a more modern rotational machine where Maritime Daily is printed now days. This machine prints in eight colors.
Editor in chief Koren Aleksander has introduced us to the newspaper. The desk employs fourteen people, four of whom are women. One of them is editor of the sports page. Women and men are paid equally for their work in this newspaper.
The Daily is registered as a cooperative legal entity. It is partly financed by subscribers and partly from the state budget, being a minority newsletter in Italy.
Six issues of Maritime Daily a week, every day apart from Monday, are printed in 8000 copies. They are distributed to subscribers’ addresses (currently there are 4000 subscribers). The Daily is also regularly delivered for free to Slovenian schools in Italy and a small part is distributed in sales. Because of small number of copies and poor print quality there are only a few parties interested in advertising in Maritime Daily. While in Italy and in the world the number of printed copies of other newspapers and magazines is decreasing for 50%, the number of printed copies of Maritime Daily remains the same due to the community which safeguards its language. This daily newspaper covers happenings in counties of Goriška, Videm and Trst. It also follows world happenings and equally uses both Slovenian and Italian news agencies as sources.
Along with preservation of the Slovenian minority language, the mission of this newspaper is to connect the minority with the nut, as well as to connect Slovenian and Italian cultures.
